Patch 12.1 PTR: New Housing Exteriors & Artisanal Room Interiors

This week's 12.1 PTR datamine turned up two mystery house exteriors and sixteen premade "artisanal" room interiors for Player Housing — and full visual previews of the rooms are now out.

  • Two new exterior options appear in the housing editor, though selecting either one currently swallows your entire plot in a giant pink cube. Blizzard confirmed these will be earnable in-game, not shop items. Notably, they're listed under house type alongside the racial options — separate from the large houses unlocking at Housing Level 12 — which points to entirely new exterior designs.
  • The artisanal rooms:
  • Sixteen rooms, four styles: Bel'ameth, Orgrimmar, Silvermoon, and Stormwind themes — bedrooms, armories, theaters, a grand hall, even a Stormwind kitchen
  • What they are: premade room templates, empty of decor but ornamented to match their theme — less manual wall-and-floor work to get a style going
  • How to get them: sold by the neighborhood General Contractors and smuggler "Fen" Rucket for ~50 Community Coupons each; contractors sell their own faction's styles, the smuggler sells the opposite faction's
  • Not testable yet: everything here is datamined — none of it is live on the PTR

On the table

  • Premade rooms are aimed at people intimidated by decorating from scratch — does this actually get either of you to touch housing, or is it still a raid-night casualty?
  • One commenter quit decorating entirely because better rooms keep dropping a patch later. Is the slow drip of housing content keeping the feature alive, or punishing the people who invested early?

Vote in the Addon Trials Finals by CurseForge

CurseForge's Addon Trials contest is down to ten finalists, and the community vote decides the final standings — winners are announced July 15, so voting closes fast.

  • A panel of CurseForge judges picked the ten based on originality, user experience, and design. The community now ranks them via a drag-and-drop form, and that ranking determines who takes first through tenth place prizes. Notably, the contest rules explicitly allowed AI-assisted "vibecoded" addons, and the comment section is at war over it.
  • Finalist highlights:
  • Coolinator: a far more customizable Cooldown Manager with drag-and-drop layouts
  • Danders Frames: fully custom party/raid frames with an Aura Designer and built-in click casting
  • EasyFind: a command bar that searches everything — settings, mounts, transmog, housing decor
  • Housing Decor Guide: full housing catalogue with 3D previews and a blueprint canvas for room planning
  • W2UI / EllesmereUI: two full UI overhauls, one styled after Bastion

On the table

  • Several finalists are openly AI-assisted, and the rules allowed it — if the addon is genuinely good, does vibecoding matter? Would you install one?
  • Which of these ten actually earns a slot in your raid UI — and what's the one dead addon you'd resurrect over any of them?

WoW Portal Room Q&A with Ion Hazzikostas Next Friday

Blizzard is hosting a Q&A with Game Director Ion Hazzikostas next Friday, July 17, at 11:00 AM Pacific in the WoW Portal Room Discord.

  • Questions won't be collected in the Portal Room itself — they have to come through Blizzard's partnered community Discords, each using its own submission format. As a Portal Room Ambassador, Wowhead is gathering questions in the #ion-interview-questions channel of its Discord and will submit the best of them.
  • Blizzard's own disclaimer: with questions pouring in from many communities, the vast majority won't be answered. This lands mid-12.1 PTR cycle, with class changes, Midnight Season 2 loot, and housing all live topics — so there's plenty on the table if the right questions get through.

On the table

  • If you could guarantee Ion answers exactly one question from you, what are you asking?
  • The Discord-only submission format filters the drive-by rage, but it also lets Blizzard curate the hard questions away — is this real community engagement or PR theater?

Physics Support Comes to Wowhead's Model Viewer

Wowhead's Model Viewer now simulates in-game physics — the first site ever to pull it off — so Lor'themar's ponytail finally obeys gravity.

  • The upgrade is live across the site's database pages via the View in 3D button, covering cloth and hair physics on NPCs, items, and armor. A Wowhead dev in the comments says the simulation costs about 1% of a single CPU core, with a WebGPU refactor of the whole viewer planned in the next 6–12 months. The team also teased that more site features are on the way.

On the table

  • Be honest — how much time do you actually sink into the model viewer and dressing room playing dress-up between pulls?
  • Wowhead keeps out-engineering everyone on tooling — what's the next fan-site or addon-ecosystem upgrade you'd actually want?
